Observation Narrative
Pinus serotina woodland in burn unit 2 at Blackwater Ecological Preserve. Low shrub layer is composed of fire sprouts of ericaceous shrubs. Unvegetated patches at ground surface are largely covered with pine needle duff, leaving little bare exposed mineral soil, which consists of coarse sand. Herb layer dominance is patchy and variable. Scattered clumps of Pyxidanthera barbulata and Xyris caroliniana occur throughout plot; the latter are especially abundant in ca. 10 sq. m patch lacking ericads in module 1. Lyonia mariana is particularly abundant in modules 6 and 7. Several dead clumps of Quercus nigra and Myrica cerifera are present, most of which have basally sprouted. Several Pinus palustris are scattered outside plot; reasons for dominance by P. serotina in this apparently well-drained and permanently dry upland site are unclear. Acer rubrum and Magnolia virginiana also observed outside plot.
Plot overlaps Stewardship plot BEP WP-1 11-94 (plot 94).
